Illo Friday Speed, or Mad on the wheel

This is my friend Mad on the wheel at a pottery studio. It doesn't look it (cos my drawing is crap), but she can work a gorgeous pot up at great speed in very little time. Hence this also goes nicely with this week's Illustration Friday challenge. It was, however, drawn for my course, the objective being to draw a working figure. I personally don't like what I have done, I don't think I have achieved a sense of life or movement here at all. While I was colouring it in, I wished I was using pastels instead, but the project was to work with coloured pencils. Also, I didn't have time to finish it in one go, so this was done in two sittings, and I had to finish it off from memory. 8th & 9th April 2006 Posted by Picasa

I can understand the need for speed with this activity. Fits the theme word perfectly! You sure got a lot of detail in this! Good job!

Your friend must be very flattered that you drew her working on her wheel. It is always good to challenge yourself!

Actually I do see movement here, she also looks very intense, that comes across, even though her face is in profile. Very nice.

It's so very hard to catch something wet/fluid/moving like a lump of clay being shaped beneath a potter's hands. What I love? Her rapt gaze at the work unfolding.

Never give up on working/looking, and your hand and eye will do things together that will make you happier.

Ooooh, thanks for the poke Andrea, I guess I get too hard on myself sometimes. I'm glad you love it!

I'm my own worst critic, too. You did a fine job with the time and tools at hand, though. Working with discomforts like this is good--it puts your talent under pressure. You've got a lot of really great detail in there, I'll have to say!

I also think you're too hard on yourself. The feeling of intensity is in your drawing, and I agree with other comments on the detail you've included here. I also like your choice for the topic. I marvel at the speed in which a good potter can throw a wonderful creation on the wheel. I love watching it. Mesmerizing.
