Phoenix for Illustration Friday

Two versions of phoenixes, the top one is done in oil pastels, the bottom with dry pastels.

Researching the story of the phoenix, I discovered that it is based in Egyptian mythology, on a bird the Egyptians called the benu, or purple heron. Hence the bottom image.

However, Greek mythology mentions that the bird has red and even gold feathers, as does Fawkes, Professor Dumbledore's phoenix. So, I decided to draw both.

Which do you prefer? I think I prefer the red one.

Me I likes the top ones too very much so I do, yes I do. Bottom birdie look a bit blurry - like one those flying duck things that you sees in a house like me mum and dad used to have, (and maybe house catch on fire).

Oh gosh, I love them both! They each have their own wonder.

I like them both. The first one is a better composition, but the bottom one speaks more to be because as Phoenix rises from the flames...it becomes cool. (warm to cool tones)Did that make sense? Both are very nice!!

I think I like the top one best, although I like the concept of both of them. They're great.

I love the colors in both, but I think I am drawn to the first one. Inspiring burst of color and energy in that one.

Two great Phoenix!

When I got the IF topic my mother-in-law was here and she, as an art teacher, used to set the choice of fire-bird or ice-bird. Looks like you did both!

(And I've not done one yet..)

Hello Heartful Blogger, love both of your phoenixes, and enjoy looking at the photos of your artwork. I especially like the commentary about what the cat is thinking. Best of 2007 to you!

Wouldn't either of these be amazing hanging on the wall. I think the Greek idea is more inspiring, I like the colors better, more vivid, umm that red, yes, my favorite is the second or top piece, so freaking creative, it's wonderful!
Happy New Year Heartful
